A home warranty does not cover any items in the event of natural or man-made disasters that can cause major damage to a home and its mechanical systems. They also do not cover events that a homeowner’s or flood insurance policy would cover, such as: tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, floods or theft. Warranty plans do not cover the physical structure of a home or personal belongings that are inside the home. In some cases, a covered appliance or system may experience a mechanical failure due to normal wear and tear and may not be economical to repair, or parts may no longer be available for older units. In these instances, a repair allowance (also known as a “cash-out”) may be paid to the homeowner. That cash-out can then be used towards the cost of a new appliance or system.
